An essential element in the investigation is the visual inspection of all building systems to preliminarily assess the likely source or causative agent in the complaint.
During the initial phase of the investigation, potential sources of water intrusion, discoloration of building materials, and the presence of "earthy" odors should be evaluated. If an obvious problem is not identified during the initial phase of the investigation, a more thorough effort may be required, including the documentation of occupant complaints and their associated observations, as well as the collection of air and surface samples.

Investigations of buildings should always target areas where contamination is suspected and include uncontaminated indoor and outdoor control samples. Of primary importance is that an adequate number of samples be collected in order to characterize the problem.
Because statistically relevant sample number recommendations do not exist, we typically recommend that as many sample locations be included in the investigation as is economically feasible. Where questions exist regarding the quantity of sampling required in a residence, we recommend that at least five indoor air sample locations be sampled (for an average size home) in order to have a reasonable chance of characterizing the problem in one site visit.

The evaluation of air and surface sampling results is generally based on the assessment and comparison of fungi quantity and species in contaminated indoor areas with uncontaminated indoor environments, as well as  a relative comparison of outdoor fungi to indoor fungi quantity and species.

Interpretation of fungi sampling results is complicated because there are currently no regulatory standards regarding acceptable levels of fungi in indoor environments.
The universally accepted method of interpretation supported by the health community is the assessment and comparison of fungi quantity and species in contaminated indoor areas with uncontaminated indoor environments, as well as relative comparison of outdoor fungi to indoor fungi quantity and species.                                                                                                                    Note: Due to common mold contamination problem and  importance of mold health hazards ENVIRONMENTAL C&R offers full service indoor air quality control for mold assessment and mold remediation. Mold assessment includes mold inspection mold testing such as mold air sampling, mold surface sampling and mold bulk sampling. , mold remediation includes toxic mold removal, black mold removal, toxic mold clean up and black mold clean up for existing commercial and residential properties in Orange County and Los Angeles areas. From mold assessment (mold inspection and toxic mold testing) to complete mold remediation (mold removal and mold decontamination) Environmental C & R offers our customers peace of mind and complete indoor environmental health.

Mold Assessment & Testing

Surface Assessment:

Surface sampling may include Tape sampling, Sterile swab wipe sampling, and Bulk sampling. Inside wall surfaces may be assessed to identify the source/extension of the intrusion. The client will be notified for approval of possible damages to the walls/surfaces for sampling purposes.

Air Sampling:

Of primary importance is that an adequate number of samples be collected in order to characterize the problem. Where questions exist regarding the quantity of sampling required in a residence, we ensure all samples are collected and analyzed in accordance with the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) publication, entitled Field Guide for the determination of Biological Contaminants in Environmental Samples, and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) publication, entitled Bioaerosols; Assessment and Control.

Viable and Non-Viable microbiological air sampling may be collected to identify the types and number of mold spores. The number and types of samples varies for each problem.

Sampling Analysis/Laboratory:

All samples will only be sent for microbiological analysis to a laboratory, which is participant in AIHA Environmental Microbiology Laboratory Accreditation Program (EMLAP) program.

Reports:

After receiving the sampling results a report will be provided to the client to address the existence of potential problems based on the sampling. There is no established level of general dose-response relationship due to the wide range of human susceptibility to diseases caused by mold. AIHA and ACGIH Guidelines will be closely followed by the CIH to review the results and provide the report to the client.
